Description

Campylobacter gastroenteritis is usually a self-limited infection, but it can have a number of complications in patients with immunodeficiency or other underlying diseases.


 

Extraintestinal infections may be more common with Campylobacter fetus subsp fetus.

 

Patients at risk:

(1) late stages of HIV infection with low CD4 count

(2) asplenia

(3) hypogammaglobulinemia

(4) immunosuppression from disease or therapy

(5) pregnancy

(6) cirrhosis

(7) severe diabetes mellitus

(8) neonates

 

Complications:

(1) prolonged gastrointestinal infection

(2) sepsis

(3) osteomyelitis

(4) cellulitis

(5) meningitis

(6) endocarditis

(7) mycotic aneurysms

(8) other localized infections (peritonitis, abscess, etc)
