Description

The presence of certain risk factors is associated with development of Dupuytren's disease.

Risk factors:

(1) increasing age

(2) male gender

(3) family history

(4) northern European descent

(5) alcohol abuse with liver disease

(6) diabetes mellitus

(7) epilepsy

(8) therapy with anticonvulsant drugs

(9) pulmonary tuberculosis

(10) AIDS

(11) cigarette smoking

(12) hypercholesterolemia

(13) hand trauma, especially if there is a strong family history

(14) have a history of localized fibromatosis elsewhere

Manual labor does not increase the incidence or severity of the disease (Hart and Hooper, page 427).

Since the presence of liver disease increases the risk for an alcoholic, it would be interesting to see if diabetics with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis have an increased risk.
