Several factors may increase the risk for retinopathy in a diabetic. Identifying and treating these factors can prevent, delay onset or slow its progression.
Factors affecting the onset and course of diabetic retinopathy:
(1) duration of the diabetes
(2) poor glycemic control (chronic hyperglycemia)
(3) nephropathy
(4) hypertension
(5) pregnancy in a Type 1 diabetic
Prevention includes:
(1) good glycemic control
(2) good control of blood pressure
(3) prevention of nephropathy
