Description

A trip to the beach may be followed by an infection.


 

Common types of infection:

(1) diarrhea or other gastrointestinal disorder

(2) skin infection

(3) eye ailment

 

Risk factors for infection:

(1) being buried in sand

(2) digging in the sand

(3) getting wet beach sand into food or eating with sandy fingers

(4) beach known to be contaminated or at risk for being contaminated

(5) eating food that is undercooked or that has not been properly stored

(6) being immunocompromised

 

Protective measures:

(1) Do not go to beaches known or at risk for being contaminated.

(2) Rinse off with clean water after being on the beach and before eating.

(3) Avoid areas where dogs or cats are allowed to defecate.

(4) Cover open wounds.

(5) Clean and treat any wound or abrasion made at the beach.
