Description

Every year many people die in flash floods around the world. The risk depends on a number of factors.

Example of flash flood situations:

(1) camper caught in a desert gorge

(2) dam break flooding a valley

(3) being caught in a normally-dry storm sewer

Risk factors for mortality:

(1) a large amount of oncoming water, sufficient to generate a wall several feet high

(2) presence of debris in the oncoming water

(3) walls or barriers that prevent escape

(4) intoxication or other impairment

(5) being caught while asleep

(6) trying to rescue someone caught in the water

(7) being caught unawares with no or little warning (for example, water associated with a thunderstorm many miles away)

(8) being caught in a car (see previous section)

(9) electrocution

(10) being buried in a mudslide

(11) hypothermia or other consquence of environmental exposure

(12) heart attack or other severe comorbid condition
