A critically-ill patient may develop diaphragm weakness if certain conditions are present. This weakness may negatively impact ventilation and impair weaning from ventilatory support.
Risk factors for critical illness-associated diaphragm weakness:
(1) sepsis
(2) mechanical ventilation, especially after hyperinflation or after prolonged ventilation
