Description

A patient with epilepsy may be more likely to "disobey" restrictions on driving if certain risk factors are present.

Risk factors associated with disobedience in following restrictions on driving:

(1) male gender

(2) employed (with a need to get to work)

(3) fewer antiepileptic medications (probably a surrogate marker for seizure severity)

Additional factors:

(1) the person is not aware of the significance of driving restrictions

(2) the person has not had a seizure in some time or thinks that the seizures are under control

(3) the person's judgment is impaired by drugs or alcohol

(4) the person believes that an aura will alert the person to an impending seizure

(5) anger and/or refusal to obey the law
