Description

Squamous cell carcinoma may arise in the conjunctiva, especially if certain risk factors are present.


 

Risk factors for conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma:

(1) prolonged, intense light exposure (sun, other), especially in the ultraviolet spectrum

(2) light skin pigmentation (Types I or II, see Chapter 21)

(3) xeroderma pigmentosa

(4) human papilloma virus (HPV) infection

(5) immunodeficiency (HIV, other) or immunosuppressive therapy

(6) heavy smoking

(7) chronic exposure to petroleum products
