Description

Physically active military personnel are at risk for lower extremity pain due to chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS), also known as exercise-induced compartment syndrome. Recognition of the condition allows for early therapy.


Features of CECS:

(1) pain in the lower leg associated with intense physical activity

(2) not explained by direct trauma

(3) raised intra-compartment pressure

(4) potential for ischemic necrosis of the anterior tibialis muscle (march gangrene)

(5) relief after fasciotomy

 

Risk factors for CECS:

(1) white race

(2) female gender

(3) older age

(4) junior enlisted rank

(5) Army service
