Description

A number of clinical conditions and biochemical states may predispose a patient to calciphylaxis.


 

Biochemical states:

(1) elevated serum calcium

(2) elevated serum phosphate

(3) hyperparathyroidism (with elevated serum parathyroid hormone)

 

Conditions associated with calciphylaxis:

(1) end-stage renal disease

(2) cirrhosis

(3) Crohn's disease

(4) HIV infection

(5) malignant lymphoma

(6) organ transplant recipients

 

Conditions that may be precipitate calciphylaxis:

(1) immunosuppression, including systemic corticosteroids

(2) local trauma

(3) blood transfusion

(4) intravenous calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3)
