Description

Bleeding can be a complication after circumcision and may be severe. Identifying risk factors for bleeding can help to avoid and manage problems.


Risk factors for bleeding:

(1) inexperience in the operator

(2) poor technique or accident

(3) underlying coagulopathy

(4) vascular malformation

(5) balanitis xerotica obliterans (an indication for circumcision)

(6) failure to use techniques that reduce bleeding when indicated

(7) poor post-circumcision care

 

Techniques that may reduce bleeding may include:

(1) use of a diathermic knife

(2) use of fibrin glue over cut surface
