Struck by incidents caused by heavy machinery are often fatal. A number of factors may increase or decrease the risk to workers.
Factors increasing the risk of a struck by incident:
(1) use of cell phone by worker or operator
(2) intoxication
(3) illness
Factors decreasing the risk of a struck by incident:
(1) use of a spotter
(2) installation of a backup alarm
(3) installation of cameras to cover blind spots
(4) awareness of blind spots for the equipment
(5) never assuming that the operator can see you
(6) having the operator walk around the equipment before starting
