Description

Sea snakes are highly venomous but fortunately being bitten by one is relatively uncommon. The risk of being bitten can be reduced in many circumstances.


 

Distribution: tropical and subtropical regions in the Indian and Pacific oceans

 

Risk factors:

(1) fishing, especially using a drag net

(2) handling the snake barehanded rather than using a tool

(3) stepping on a snake while wading

(4) bathing in the sea or rivers leading into the sea

(5) ignorance about the snakes and the dangers involved

(6) being intoxicated
