Description

Swans and geese can be very aggressive animals. During the Vietnam War soldiers used geese as guard animals. People have died after being attacked by a swan or goose.

Risk factors for an attack from a swan or goose:

(1) The bird is a male protecting a nesting site.

(2) The bird is not afraid of humans, often due to being fed by or living near humans (habituated).

(3) The person does not behave appropriately to the attack.

(4) The person is afraid of geese, possibly due to a previous attack.

(5) A female bird joins in the attack.

(6) Hot weather or other conditions making the birds more aggressive.

Recommended behavior if attacked by a swan or goose:

(1) Maintain eye contact with the bird at all times. Keep your face and torso directed towards the bird.

(2) Never turn away and run.

(3) Do not show fear or act aggressive (be neutral).

(4) Slowly back away from the bird's nesting area.

(5) If the bird flies towards you, then move at a right angle to the bird's direction while keeping the front of your body pointed towards the bird.

Risk factors for death or serious injury during the attack:

(1) being on the water without a life preserver (drowning)

(2) heart disease

(3) fall or other traumatic injury while trying to avoid the bird
