Description

Hippopotami may appear slow and docile, but they can move fast (up to 45 miles per hour) and inflict serious injuries.


 

Humans may be injured by a hippopotamus if:

(1) they provoke an adult male

(2) they come between a female hippo and her calf

(3) they provoke an ill or injured hippo

(4) they are perceived as a threat, especially when the hippo feels trapped

(5) they are walking in the track made by a hippo between grazing sites and the river edge

 

People at risk:

(1) someone who is intoxicated

(2) people in a boat who get too close

(3) someone who panics

(4) someone who stumbles upon them, especially at night
