A kitchen towel may be an overlooked source of foodborne pathogens, especially in the home. A kitchen towel may be used for some time without being washed.


Risk factors for pathogens on a kitchen towel:

(1) large family or extended family

(2) presence of children

(3) multipurpose towel

(4) long-term use between washings

(5) wet towel

(6) cotton towel

 

The type of diet influences the prevalence of bacteria that can be isolated from the towel.
