Description

Terbufos (TBF) is an extremely hazardous organophosphate pesticide. While restricted in developed countries it can still be encountered in third world countries.


Risk factors for terbufos poisoning:

(1) no or poor regulations on use

(2) over-application

(3) improper application equipment or storage

(4) inadequate or defective personal protective equipment (PPE)

(5) lack of hygienic precautions

 

Source of poisoning:

(1) dermal

(2) inhalation

(3) ingestion

 

Death can occur within a few hours of the exposure.

 

The diagnosis is supported by:

(1) extremely low erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase activity

(2) detectable terbufos in liver and blood
