Description

A number of conditions may be associated with the development of an anal fistula.


 

Infections:

(1) pelvic tuberculosis

(2) perianal actinomycosis

(3) lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

(4) HIV infection

(5) amebiasis

 

Inflammatory conditions:

(1) Crohn’s disease

(2) pilonidal disease

(3) hidradenitis suppurativa

(4) “bridging” of an anal fissure

 

Traumatic disorders:

(1) anorectal trauma

(2) anorectal surgery

(3) obstetrical injury

(4) anorectal foreign body

 

Other:

(1) radiation therapy

(2) presacral dermoid cyst

(3) sacrococcygeal teratoma

(4) rectal duplication
