Acute suppurative parotitis usually occurs in a patient with one or more risk factors that favor either an ascending infection along the parotid duct or bacteremia.
Risk factors for acute suppurative parotitis:
(1) dehydration
(2) poor oral hygiene
(3) immunosuppression
(4) newborn infant
(5) general debilitation
(6) xerostomia from drugs or disease
