Description

Actinomycosis is an uncommon infection which is more likely to be encountered if certain risk factors are present.


 

Risk factors for actinomycosis:

(1) young to middle-aged adult (20 to 60 years of age)

(2) male gender

(3) diabetes mellitus

(4) alcoholism

(5) recent trauma or surgery

(6) intrauterine device (IUD) if female

(7) tissue damage secondary to irradiation

(8) bisphosphonate therapy

(9) immunosuppression or altered host defenses

(9a) HIV disease

(9b) corticosteroid therapy

(9c) transplantation

(9d) leukemia with chemotherapy
