A number of factors may predispose to the development of a Zenker’s diverticulum.
Location: at the junction of the pharynx and esophagus, on the posterior wall at the pharyngeal dimple
Risk factors for a Zenker’s diverticulum:
(1) congenital muscle defect
(2) advanced age
(3) glass blower
(4) trumpet player
(5) weight lifting
(6) following anterior cervical fusion
Theoretically trauma could be a cause.
