Description

Some topical therapies contain a volatile solvent that can ignite and result in a thermal burn. This risk exists for both pharmaceuticals and folk remedies.


 

Flammable solvents used in topical therapies:

(1) alcohol (ethanol, other)

(2) kerosene (used to treat lice)

(3) organic solvents

(4) volatile chemicals

 

Many of the topical insecticides used to treat scabies or lice are highly flammable.

 

Ignition may occur from:

(1) a match

(2) a lit cigarette or cigar

(3) fire

(4) pilot light to an oven

 

Risk factors for serious burn:

(1) volatility of the solvent

(2) surface area involved

(3) presence of other flammable materials, especially clothing

(4) response of the person or onlookers to the fire
