Description

Splenic abscess are uncommon and can be challenging to diagnose. The presence of certain risk factors can help to identify a patient in whom the diagnosis should be considered.


 

Risk factors:

(1) intravenous drug user

(2) history of splenic infarct

(3) history of splenic trauma

(4) unresolved, partially treated splenic hydatid cyst

(5) immunocompromised status, including HIV disease

(6) bacterial endocarditis

(7) disseminated tuberculosis or deep fungal infection

(8) positive blood culture with certain organisms

(9) history of a splenic abscess without splenectomy

 

Organisms isolated in blood culture that may be associated with a splenic abscess:

(1) Staphylococcus aureus

(2) Salmonella typhi or related species

(3) Bacteroides species

(4) other Gram-negative enteric bacteria

(5) Streptococcus viridans

(6) Pseudomonas aeruginosa

(7) Candida species
