Description

Pedestrians are at increased risk for being injured by vehicles during winter weather. This risk can be reduced by addressing identifiable factors.


 

Pedestrian risk factors for accidents:

(1) wearing scarves and hats that obscure vision and impair hearing

(2) walking in the street

(3) slipping on ice

(4) walking without regards for traffic

(5) intoxication

(6) playing or roughhousing

(7) wearing dull or white clothing that blends with the snow

(8) walking in conditions of poor visibility

 

Vehicle risk factors for accidents:

(1) poor visibility due to snow, ice or debris on windows

(2) inability to stop on ice-covered streets

(3) spinning or veering out of control

(4) being struck by another vehicle

(5) driver intoxication

(6) mechanical failure
