Description

Attacks on humans by jaguars (Panthera onca) are uncommon but can be serious.


Risk factors:

(1) habitat destruction with increased potential for human contact

(2) loss of normal prey

(3) hunting or trying to capture a jaguar

(4) predatory behavior by the jaguar (person asleep, child)

(5) being surprised

(6) during the mating season

(7) presence of cubs

 

Types of injuries:

(1) bite to the neck with damage to the cervical spine

(2) bites at other sites

(3) claw marks
