Description

Domper Arnal et al reported risk factors for a positive fecal hemoglobin immunochemical test (FHIT) in the absence of a colorectal cancer. The authors are from multiple institutions in Zaragoza and Madrid in Spain.

Patient selection: positive fecal hemoglobin immunochemical test (FHIT)

Causes of a positive FHIT in the absence of gastrointestinal neoplasia:

(1) female sex (OR 2.7)

(2) non-neoplastic pathology (seen on endoscopy; OR 1.5)

(3) therapy with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs; OR 1.8), especially if male taking a gastric irritating drug (OR 2)

where:

• PPI's may be given for esophagitis or gastritis, which could cause blood in the stool.
