Description

A worker who is involved in the extraction of gas or oil may be at risk for a fatal accident if one or more risk factors are present.


 

Risk factors for death in a gas or oil extraction worker:

(1) pushing hard to increase production or to meet a quota/deadline

(2) use of an older rig with fewer safety features

(3) use of inexperienced or new workers

(4) fatigue

(5) failure to use safety equipment properly (such as seat belts while driving)

 

where:

• Almost a third of workers killed from 2003-2006 died during a transportation accident (highway or aircraft).

 

Additional risk factors may include:

(1) inclement weather, especially if wet or at temperature extremes

(2) intoxication

(3) high risk job

(4) equipment failure

(5) responding to an emergency or urgent situation

(6) loose or inappropriate clothing

(7) poor visibility situation such as poor lighting
