Description

The presence of certain risk factors may increase a patient's risk of developing the anticonvulsant drug hypersensitivity syndrome. The presence of one or more risk factors should increase the clinician's level of suspicion for the diagnosis when clinical symptoms are present.


 

Drugs involved: phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital

 

Risk factors associated with anticonvulsant drug hypersensitivity:

(1) African ancestry (African, Afro-American, Afro-Caribbeans)

(2) previous hypersensitivity reaction to the same drug

(3) previous hypersensitivity reaction to another drug in the group

(4) sibling of a patient who has had an anticonvulsant drug hypersensitivity reaction

(5) current history of alcohol abuse
