Description

Hemorrhage following tonsillectomy is rare but a potentially life-threatening complication.


 

Risk factors for hemorrhage following tonsillectomy:

(1) adult, especially adult males (with some using > 15 years of age as an adult)

(2) bleeding disorder or anticoagulation therapy

(3) tonsillar infection

(4) vascular malformation in the region of the tonsils

(5) difficult or traumatic procedure

(6) hypertension

(7) hyperthyroidism

 

Children < 8 years of age are at greater risk for serious hemorrhage.
