Description

Nocardia species are ubiquitous in the soil, and infection may occur if certain risk factors are present. A patient with intact host defenses may develop a localized infections after an environmental exposure. More severe infections tend to occur in those with some defect in host defenses.


 

Risk factors for cutaneous and soft tissue infections (including mycetoma):

(1) insect or animal bite

(2) some environmental trauma

 

Risk factors for pulmonary, cerebral and systemic infections:

(1) long-term corticosteroid therapy

(2) immunodeficiency state, including AIDS

(3) alcoholism

(4) diabetes

(5) chronic lung disease (pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, pulmonary fibrosis, silicosis)

(6) organ transplant recipient

(7) lymphoma or other lymphoreticular neoplasm

(8) other immunosuppression
