Description

Lithium intoxication may occur if certain risk factors are present.


 

Risk factors associated with increased lithium intake:

(1) increase in lithium dose

(2) intentional or accidental overdose

 

Risk factors associated with lithium toxicity:

(1) elderly

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) chronic renal failure

(4) congestive heart failure

(5) low food intake

 

Risk factors associated with electrolyte abnormalities:

(1) Addison's disease

(2) vomiting

(3) diarrhea

(4) low salt diet

 

Drug interactions associated with increased risk of toxicity

(1) thiazide diuretics

(2) ibuprofen

(3) indomethacin

(4) phenylbutazone

(5) dictofenac

(6) tetracycline

(7) piroxicam

(8) mazindol

(9) phenytoin

(10) cisplatin

(11) lisonopril

(12) carbamezepine

(13) methyldopa

(14) neuroleptic agents
