Description

Group B Streptococcal infections are being diagnosed more frequently in nonpregnant adults, especially if certain risk factors are present.


 

Patient selection: nonpregnant adult

 

Risk factors for infection with Group B Streptococcus:

(1) diabetes mellitus

(2) renal failure

(3) chronic liver disease, including alcohol abuse

(4) chronic pulmonary disease

(5) peripheral vascular disease

(6) atherosclerotic heart disease

(7) HIV disease

(8) malignancy

(9) cerebrovascular disease

(10) dementia

(11) paraplegia or quadriplegia

(12) urologic disease, including neurogenic bladder

(13) intravascular catheter

(14) decubitus ulcer

(15) corticosteroid therapy

(16) asplenia

 

The increased number of infections in the elderly may be related to age or to the comorbid conditions that accompany aging.
