Description

There is no standard definition for housing insecurity. It is a constellation of findings that are associated with unstable living arrangements.


Risk factors:

(1) being behind on rent or mortgage

(2) lack of financial resources

(3) high housing costs (unaffordable housing)

(4) history of evictions or repossessions

 

Associated problems:

(1) food insecurity

(2) homelessness, substance abuse and/or mental illness

(3) lack of utilities

(4) job insecurity

(5) neglect and abuse

(6) overcrowding

(7) unsafe neighborhoods

(8) insect or rodent infestations
