Description

Garcia et al evaluated the significance of rib fractures as a marker of severe trauma in children. This can help identify children who require more aggressive evaluation and management. The authors are from the George Washington University Medical Center and Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.


Patient selection:

(1) children age <= 14 years of age

(2) blunt or penetrating trauma

 

Parameters:

(1) number of rib fractures

(2) maximum head Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS)
