Description

Michaud and Wolfe developed the Rheumatic Disease Comorbidity Index (RCDI) to evaluate a patient with rheumatic disease for comorbid conditions.

Parameters:

(1) lung disease (ICD-9 490 to 493.99, 494, 495, 496, 500 to 505.99, 515 to 517.99, 714.81)

(2) cardiovascular diseases (myocardial infarction, other cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension) (ICD-9 410 to 412.99; 394 to 396.99, 402, 404, 413-414.99, 424.0 to 424.3, 425 to 428.99; 430 to 431,99, 433 to 435.99, 997.02; 401, 405)

(3) fracture to spine, hip or leg (ICD-9 733.13 to 733.16, 733.93, 793.97 to 733.98, 805 to 806.99, 808, 820 to 821.99, 823, 827)

(4) depression (ICD-9 296.2 to 296.39, 300.4, 311))

(5) diabetes (ICD-9 249 to 250.99)

(6) cancer (ICD-9 140 to 209.39)

(7) peptic ulcer or stomach problem (ICD-9 531 to 535.7, 536.3. 536.8 to 536.9, 578.9)

where:

• Cancer is weighted the same as fracture or depression.

total score =

= SUM(points for all 7 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum RDCI: 0

• maximum RDCI: 9

• The higher the RDCI the greater the comorbidity. The RDCI correlated with death and function.
