Revised criteria for myofascial pain are part of the Diagnostic Criteria of Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD).
Features - both of the following:
(1) pain involving the face, jaw, temple, in front of or in the ear in the past month
(2) one of the following:
(2a) familiar pain produced by palpation of the temporalis muscle with 2-3 pounds of pressure
(2b) familiar pain in the temporalis or masseter muscles on unassisted mandibular opening
(2c) familiar pain in the temporalis or masseter muscles on assisted mandibular opening
Subtypes:
(1) myofascial pain with unassisted opening without pain >= 40 mm (interincisal opening plus vertical incisal overlap)
(2) myofascial pain with unassisted opening without pain < 40 mm ("limited opening")
