Description

Corpechot et al refined criteria for a biochemical response to therapy with ursodeoxcholic acid (UDCA) in a patient with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). The authors are from Hoital Saint-Antoine Publique-Hopitaux de Paris and Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris.

Patient selection: primary biliary cirrhosis after 1 year of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy

Early PBC was defined as both normal serum total bilirubin and serum albumin concentrations at baseline.

Parameters:

(1) serum alkaline phosphatase as multiple of upper limit of normal (ULN)

(2) serum AST as multiple of upper limit of normal (ULN)

(3) serum total bilirubin in mg/dL

The most accurate metric for response over several years was the Paris IIb criteria.
