Description

The Medical Review Officer (MRO) must personally review or oversee the review of drug test results performed under Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The review of negative results can be delegated to qualified office personnel operating under the MRO's supervision.

Requirements:

(1) The MRO must have a copy of the laboratory results (a completed Copy 1 of the DOT chain of custody form, paper report or electronic copy of a report)

(2) The MRO must have a legible copy of a DOT test form with the patient's signature (Copy 2, 3, 4 or 5 of the DOT chain of custody form).

(3) Review of the negative results can be delegated to qualified office personnel under the supervision of the MRO.

(4) All forms and reports should be scrutinized for errors. If any errors are detected these must be corrected before the result is reported.

(5) Only the MRO can cancel a test.

The MRO must review all negative results requiring corrective action and all those that are cancelled.

The MRO must review at least 5% of negative test results per quarter up to a maximum of 500. This number includes all negative results requiring corrective action (I did not include the number cancelled in the spreadsheet implementation).

The chain of custody forms reviewed must be readily available for a DOT audit and must clearly show evidence of the MRO review.
