Description

Initial management of a burn patient involves resuscitation and stabilization. Certain findings can help to decide if these goals have been achieved. The Joint Trauma System Clinical Practice Guideline (JTS CPG) outlines its use.

Patient selection: major burn injury

Timing of assessment: 24 to 72 hours (1 to 3 days) after burn

Goals for resuscitation - all of the following:

(1) The patient is able to follow commands.

(2) The patient is hemodynamically stable.

(3) The heart rate is 110-130 beats per minute.

(4) Urine output is 30 to 50 mL per hour.

(5) The acid-base balance has normalized (return to normal base excess).

(6) The hematocrit shows dilutional anemia.

(7) Pulses are present in all 4 extremities.
