Description

The response to therapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) can be classified based on a number of laboratory findings.

Complete response (CR) - all of the following for at least 4 weeks:

(1) normal bone marrow with < 5% blasts (a higher percent may be allowed if the marrow is regenerating)

(2) absolute neutrophil count > 1,500 per µL

(3) platelet count > 100,000 per µL

(4) absence of extramedullary leukemic infiltrates

(5) absence of leukemic blasts in the peripheral blood

(6) absence of blasts with Auer rods

Partial remission option 1 - all of the following:

(1) bone marrow blast count from 5 to 25%

(2) items 2 to 6 from complete remission

Partial remission option 2 - all of the following:

(1) blast cells with Auer rods or abnormal morphology

(2) items 1 to 5 for complete remission

Nonresponse: failure to achieve complete or partial remission in a patient who survives >= 30 days of treatment
