Description

Footwear is an important part of personal protective equipment (PPE). Conductive footwear is used if static electricity could be a hazard.

When to consider use of conductive footwear:

(1) explosion is an issue (explosive, grain elevator, etc)

(2) electrical hazard is not an issue

Conductive material reduces the buildup of static electricity. There should also be no exposed ferrous materials that could generate a spark.

The worker:

(1) should not use foot powder (provide insulation, reducing the conductivity)

(2) should not wear silk, wool or nylon socks (can generate static electricity)

Conductive footwear:

(1) should be removed once the work requiring their use is complete or the area is left.

(2) should never be worn if an electrical hazard exists
