A visual warning needs to have certain features to be effective.


 

The warning message should:

(1) be easy to read, with large font and good contrast with the background, avoiding long blocks of unbroken text

(2) be as short as possible yet be able to convey the key information

(3) include a picture or diagram to supplement the text

(4) provide redundant and reinforcing cues

(5) be attractive

(6) be durable and able to withstand its environment

(7) be located where the information is needed

(8) be designed to avoid habituation

(9) be readily understood by the people likely to need it (avoiding complex and technical terms, using universal hazard indicators, be multilingual when appropriate)

(10) provide relevant information

 

The warning system should be:

(1) monitored for effectiveness

(2) monitored for need

(3) inspected periodically, and repaired or replaced as needed
