Description

Bloch and Basile identified risk factors which can help identify a patient with renal arterial stenosis who may have a poor outcome to a vascular intervention such as a stent placement or percutaneous angioplasty. The authors are from the University of Nevada and the Medical University of South Carolina.

Parameter

Finding Associated with Poor Outcome

renal length

< 8 cm

serum creatinine

> 3.5 mg/dL

other causes of renal disease

diabetes, amyloid, drugs

long-standing renal disease

essential hypertension, renal dysfunction

atherosclerosis

extensive disease

The presence of one or more of these findings may help identify a patient with progression or no improvement after the vascular intervention.
