Typical length of an adult female worm: 1 meter (100 cm)
Method:
(1) Once the worm starts to emerge from the skin defect, it is firmly grasped and the end wound around a small stick. The stick is then taped or tied adjacent to the skin opening.
(2) The worm can only be withdrawn a few centimeters per day. Every day this material is wound around the stick.
(3) After a 2 to 4 weeks the worm will be completely removed.
Consequences if the worm is killed or torn:
(1) sudden release of antigenic material, which can cause an allergic reaction and severe inflammation
(2) bacterial contamination of the worm track, which can result in cellulitis and abscesses
Metronidazole, mebendazole, niridazole or thiabendazole can be used to expel the worm more quickly without the need to slowly withdraw it.
