Rarely a patient may have reflex seizures related to bathing.
Pathogenesis: uncertain, possibly secondary to tactile stimulation
Some patients have mutations in
(1) SYN1 on chromosome Xp11-q21
(2) at 10q21.3-q22.3
(3) at 4q24-q28
Clinical features:
(1) family history of epilepsy
(2) onset may be during childhood
(3) partial, complex partial or generalized tonic-clonic reflex seizures
(4) onset during or soon after bathing or showering
(5) some patients may have seizures triggered only by hot water, while others can have seizures with water of any temperature
(6) some patients may have seizures triggered by other stimuli (haircutting, fingernail clipping, etc)
(7) some patients may have seizures unrelated to bathing or other triggers
