Description

Ticks attach to a host to engorge on a blood meal. During the process of feeding the tick may introduce pathogens or toxins into the host. The best method to avoid tick-borne diseases is to prevent tick attachment.

Trip precautions:

(1) Avoid forests with dense undergrowth when possible.

(2) Stay on a road or path, avoiding the vegetation along the sides.

(3) Search your head, body and clothes for ticks after returning from an outing.

Clothing precautions:

(1) Wear long pants and shirts with long sleeves.

(2) Wear boots with long socks.

(3) Place the socks over the bottom of the pants's legs.

(4) Wear bright colors, avoiding brown colored clothing, so that ticks can be more readily seen.

If you have a dog:

(1) use an anti-tick collar or apply an acaricidal spray.

(2) search the dog for ticks after an outing, being careful that ticks do not move from the dog to you.
