Description

Mosquitoes transmit a number of infectious pathogens, ranging from viruses to protozoa. A key means of preventing many mosquito transmitted infections is to prevent mosquito bites.

Steps to reduce mosquito bites:

(1) limiting outdoor activities during peak hours of mosquito activity (in the evening, at night, or early in the morning)

(2) wearing long-sleaved shirts, long pants and socks

(3) using DEET-based insect repellents

(4) eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites

(5) make sure that doors and windows have tight fitting screens

Mosquito activity:

(1) may be year round in the Tropics and Subtropics

(2) from May to October in the Northern Unites States

Eliminating mosquito breeding sites:

(1) draining standing water

(1a) remove containers in the yard and next to buildings: old tires, buckets, cans, etc

(1b) unclog gutters and downspouts

(2) maintaining swimming pools properly

(2a) clean and chlorinate regularly

(2b) cover

(2c) drain when not in use

(3) maintaining ornamental water containers such as bird baths and fountains

(3a) change standing water at least once a week

(3b) use Mosquito Dunk in bird baths and other areas of standing water

(4) commercial application of larvicides

In the event of serious risk to public health, professional application of adulticides may be undertaken in the community.
