Description

A Bovie instrument can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED). Robinson et al listed steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of this interference during surgery. The authors are from the Universtiy of Colorado, Medtronic Inc, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery of Arizona and theUniversity of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Patient selection: patient with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) undergoing surgery where a Bovie instrument will be used.

The Bovie instrument is monopolar device that emits radiofrequency energy which is used to perform a variety of functions during surgery.
