Description

An infant or child with torticollis can have a potentially serious underlying condition. The presence of certain findings can help to identify a child who may require a more complete evaluation.


Patient selection: infant or child

 

Clinical findings that may indicate a serious underlying condition:

(1) ocular motor asymmetry (nystagmus, etc)

(2) palpable neck mass not involving the sternocleidomastoid muscle

(3) skeletal anomalies or asymmetries

(4) delayed development and integration of primitive reflexes

(5) presence of pathologic reflexes

(6) absence of movement of any extremity

(7) fever

(8) sore throat

(9) headache

(10) limited range of motion for the cervical spine

(11) photophobia
