Description

Rarely a parent may be alarmed by the presence of a red diaper in a neonate or infant.


Causes may include:

(1) Serratia marcescens colonization of the GI tract or urinary tract infection

(2) drug (many drugs causing red urine would not be given to a neonate or infant)

(3) food source (less likely if not weaned)

(4) blood

(5) porphyria

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) diaper made of red cloth
